Why "Informatics".........?

The US National Science Board (NSB), in its Report on Environmental
Science and Engineering for the 21st Century (National Science Board,
2000), has put the issue succinctly:

|
Acquiring data is no longer the major hurdle managing, validating
and understanding the data are the new challenges. |
|
| |
Today's world is increasingly action-oriented. Yet problems are not
solved by taking measurements alone, no matter how reassuring it may
be to imagine this conspicuous activity will somehow substitute for
reflection, contemplation, and formal, quantitative interpretation
of what has been observed. Data must be processed to provide information
that will guide policy formulation and technological innovation. How
society responds to such environmental information will have a bearing
on future technological innovation. |
